Vladimir and Suzdal are two of the most popular cities on the Golden Ring of Russia tourist route and it is no surprise why, as the historical centres of the these cities will take you back to Mediaeval Rus. Vladimir is believed to have been founded at the end of the 10th century. Famous figures from mediaeval Russian history are connected with the city, such as Andrey Bogolyubsky, Vladimir Monomakh, Vsevolod the Big Nest and Aleksandr Nevsky. Vladimir eventually become the capital of north-eastern Rus, with the grand prince of Vladimir becoming the most senior ruler in Rus, and these grand princes set about building white stone cathedrals and founded monasteries to decorate the new capital. Suzdal was also the capital of north-eastern Rus before the emergence of Vladimir, but today it is quiet Russian provincial town, albeit one like no other. Only in Suzdal have so many beautiful architectural monuments been preserved. In all there are 33 churches, five monasteries and 14 bell towers. For this reason the city is often described as an open-air museum.
