Small Group Tour: Downton Abbey and Village Tour of Locations from London
Overview
On this small group day tour you will start by departing from central London, then heading for the charming Oxfordshire village that has been featured as Downton Village. Here, you will get a guided tour of locations such as Downton hospital, the village pub, the former home of Matthew Crawley and the local church.
Get fascinating anecdotes about how the global hit TV series was made, about the actors involved and about the wonderful history of the places you visit on the tour.
A short comfort break will be taken here. Having explored the village, you will then travel to Highclere Castle, which is used as the main Downton Abbey set. On the way, you will learn about the 1000 year history of Highclere Castle and life ‘above and below stairs’. Admission to the castle is included in the price.
Food for lunch can be purchased at Highclere Castle or you can bring your own lunch and enjoy it in the beautiful grounds. You’ll be able to explore independently the ‘Above Stairs’ area inside Downton Abbey with the aid of our self-guided information sheet.
As you wander around the estate, you will be able to imagine life as it was over 100 years ago and enter the world of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants.
The tour ends back in central London.

Our guide and driver, Caroline and Ray, were fantastic! It was my dream to visit Highclere Castle and tour the areas that Downton Abbey were filmed. The tour was very enjoyable and Caroline's enthusiasm and knowledge were the highlight of the tour. The tour was the perfect length, and the locations were great. I would highly recommend this tour, and if you are lucky to have Caroline and Ray as your guide/driver, you will not be disappointed!

Eva was great and provided wonderful information. I loved the trivia! I didn't feel rushed in either of the locations.
We enjoyed our tour of Highclaire Castle and the town a Bampton. Our tour guide, whose name escapes me at the moment, was fabulous and provided many extra tidbits about the filming and the story lines. A most enjoyable day except for the coach was not the most comfortable. We took the smaller coach thinking we wouldn't be in such a large group, thinking we'd get more personalized attention, which was accurate. However, I ended up sitting all the way in the back in the corner, not enough leg room or seat room, very uncomfortable.
Overall the tour is good with plenty of time to explore the castle and grounds there are great places to have lunch set out in the gardens. Eva made the trip to and back from London fun with stories and quizzes
The sights to see were enchanting. It was fun taking a step back through Hollywood to the early parts of the 20th Century.
The drive back to London was harrowing. I will blame some of it on poorly maintained country roads. I will blame some of it on a woefully lacking suspension system in the bus. And I will put a lot of the blame on them irresponsible driver, who went to fast over many of the streets which resulted in several of the passengers being bounced out of their seats, despite wearing seatbelts. There were several occasions where the passengers yelled and screamed at the driver to slow down. Well I don’t think any of us ever were in danger, his reckless driving left several of the passengers scared.
