Stop At: Blenheim Palace, Woodstock OX20 1PP England

The drive to Blenheim Palace takes approximately 1.5 Hours from London. But London seems like a whole world away when you gaze for the first time at Blenheim Palace.

Perhaps King George III words to the 4th Duke of Marlborough say it all, "We have nothing to equal this!"

The land and money to build Blenheim Palace was gifted to John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough by Queen Anne for his leadership and victories during the War of the Spanish Succession. With a final great triumph at the battle of Blenheim.

His wife Sarah was a great friend of Queen Anne until the relationship soured and both John and Sarah went into exile in France leaving Blenheim Palace unfinished. Queen Anne died on 1st August 1714 and the Marlborough's moved back to England the next day. By 1722 the Palace was complete but John Churchill died the same year.

Today the 12th Duke of Marlborough and his family live in the Palace, therefore you quite literally are a guest of his Grace the Duke when you visit this spectacular family home.

The Palace has had a long and sometimes troubled past, but all the best stories have ups and downs. Your personal Driver and Guide will give you a detailed history of the magnificent Palace and a tour through it's many beautiful rooms, including the room where Sir Winston Churchill was born in 1874. If you are feeling energetic there are beautiful walks to be had in the gardens, and for those with a particular interest in Winston Churchill, your guide will take you to the spot where he awkwardly proposed to Clementine in August 1908,

There are optional tours available at certain times of the year when the Duke of Marlborough and his family are not in residence. Those interested may want to visit his personal apartments or perhaps see how life below stairs in the servants quarters used to be.

Lunch can either be taken at the Palace or in the nearby Villages of Woodstock or Bladon.

A personalised and non rushed tour at your pace.

Duration: 4 hours

Stop At: St. Martin's Church, Church Street, Bladon, Woodstock OX20 1RW England

An optional visit to the small Church where Sir Winston Churchill and his Wife Clementine are buried. Sir Winston is buried with other members of his family including Consuelo Vanderbilt who in part inspired the character of Cora in Downton Abbey.

Very close to the Church is a pub which may make an ideal lunch stop.

Richard is simply a fantastic guide, extremely knowlegdeable and a great conversationalist. A private tour with him is a real treat. Richard makes sure you get the most out of your visit, and enables you to experience what interests you and at your pace. He never rushed things and was always very accomodating. Richard is a smooth, skilled driver. Getting picked up at my hotel in London and being dropped off there later in the day was a great convenience. The roughly 90 minutes it takes to Blenheim Palace from London went by in a jiffy listening to Richard talking about (as well as discussing together) Churchill, the history of Blenheim Palace and many other things. Richard certainly knows his Churchill well, telling many interesting and often funny anecdotes about the great statesman.
Seeing Churchill's grave at Bladon was a moving experience. Blenheim Palace was simply magnificent. Richard led me on a great tour around the estate and palace. We had a nice lunch there, too. The way back was just as pleasant as the drive to Blenheim had been. We were having very interesting discussions about politics and history and many other things.
Thank you, Richard, for such a fantastic experience!

My mother and I had a great day with Richard! He picked us up at our hotel promptly, drove us to Blenheim in his impeccably clean car, and provided us with every bit of information we could possibly want regarding the Churchills and their famous palace. Afterward, he brought us to the village of Woodstock where we were able to have an authentic Cotswolds pub lunch. Lastly, we drove over to the Churchill family gravesite. He never rushed us, and was a wonderful conversationalist. I highly recommend this tour.

Richard of Richards Tours was our guide and did a great job. We were picked up at our hotel and taken to Blenheim for our tour. He was informative and shared his extensive knowledge of the palace. We enjoyed his commentary. We had enough free time to do a little shopping and also stopped for a pub lunch before returning to London. We highly recommend this tour especially when conducted by Richard.

Amazing tour with Mark to Blenheim Palace. He is very knowledgeable and an excellent guide. We really enjoyed being on a private tour where we could delve into the architecture, artwork and history of the Palace. We stopped at the White House, a lovely pub, for lunch at Bladon and then walked to the graves of the Winston Churchill family. This was a wonderful day outing and we would gladly tour with Mark again.

This was a fantastic day tour to Blenheim Palace and into the Cotswold area. We got to see everything we wanted to see with some surprises as well. Blenheim Palace is spectacular and the state rooms are truly impressive. I would rate these as comparable to what you would see at Hampton Court Palace as well. The Churchill exhibition was very special. The special surprise here was that we got to hear the great organ being played. This was really special and unexpected on the tour. The grounds are very beautiful as well. The next surprise was the great lunch we had at The King's Head pub in Bledington. A cozy and beautiful pub and we got a table next to the fireplace and keep us nice and warm. The food was very good and they accommodated my wife request for some seafood. They prepared a grilled seabass for her and she really enjoyed it. Finally, we went to Lower Slaughter and walked around the village. At the small church there was a wedding that was just finished and we got to see the bride and groom. This is a beautiful little Cotswold village with crystal clear stream flowing through it. A definite place to visit. Finally, we spent some time at Bourton on the Water and this was also very special. There was a beautiful stream flowing through and the many shops and tea room made this very inviting. In a small shop my wife found a very nice bread box that we bought as a souvenir. So, we really had the special day filled with all the things we particularly wanted to see. This was all due to the great tour guide that arranged all of this for us. Richard was a great guide and driver and made this a trip we will always remember. Really grateful to Richard and highly recommend him as your tour guide to Blenheim Palace and the Cotswold. He is very knowledgeable about the history and sights of the Palace and the region.
